Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

DM:
Triel

"I... yes." Elvar visibly gathers himself and pushes forward to meet the people running towards your group. They turn out to be his seneschal and what passes for the head of what passes for the Triel militia. They lead Elvar back toward the stockade wall, encouraging and questioning in equal measure, and not objecting when you follow.

People start peeling off of the group the closer you get to Triel's gate. Several of the prisoners are locals, and go running off as they spot family. Others were part of caravans that were camped in the vast green sward surrounding Triel. They slow, looking around in confusion as they try to figure out where to go.

Elvar's comrades chivvy him into the stockade's central keep. It's still claustrophobically tight, filled with meticulously annotated boxes and crates and barrels of preserved food. You crowd into Elvar's office, and he nearly collapses into his chair. "I'm back. We need to get the wall repaired before the wolves come. I'm back." His eyes widen. "The grain! Have you checked the grain? Rats must have been coming through the wall!"

He continues in a similar vein, everything else forgotten in his focus on Triel's grain storage, while his seneschal tries to assure him things are fine, her arms held at nearly full extension.

((DM--in 4th Edition I think this would be construed as a Charisma attack.  Kitheras is an accomplished bard, has a high charisma, and is a noble in nearby lands.  I'm going to put my foot down and see if we can get somewhere.))

Kitheras barely contains his frustration. "Lord Mayor, my men are still in the belly of the beast. We can stop the wolves from returning, but we must know what we are facing. We have asked for no reward but your best recollections of what you recall. Who are these slavers, how long have their been signs of them, and what do you know of them?"

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

He could see the look on Torvek's face even if he couldn't see Krackor's.  He looks around and sees that the chamber if far wider than it looks, so he gets his Crossbow, loads a Clay tipped Crossbow Bolt and fires in the direction of the opposite side of the Chasm, into the darkness where even his Infravision doesn't reach.

As the bolt hits the far wall, a sudden bright light emits as the crash of the clay breaks on the tip,the continual lighton the tip of the Crossbow Bolt lit the cavern wall and it's surroundings, allowing Torvek and the others to see their own side as the light between them and the radius of the light, allowed the silhouette of everything to be seen.

"Torvek, I hope this helps. We could have taken a torch from the walls on the way down here but I'm sure this will do for you. Use a full cover of leather to block its light, when you don't want the light to show, after you collect it first of course.

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

Triel

Lord Elvar turns towards Kitheras and throws his hands in the air. "How should I know? The Trielta Hills have always been peaceful! They have nothing more than gnomes and halflings who provide us with much of the grain that allows Triel to survive the winter. Assuming we don't let rats get into the granaries," he growls, looking at his underlings. Neither of them flinch. "There hasn't been a giant sighting in over a century. I have no idea where they might have come from."

He huffs, then looks down at his hands. "But thank you most sincerely for getting rid of them."

"We will find their lair and remove any that remain good mayor.  Do you have any other requests for us other than the rats of course.  Your minions should be able to handle those.  Will you be able to provide us with provisions for this task?  if not Mystra will provide."

He continues to rub his aching shoulder.  Starting to get used to the weight of his armor again.

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

As Torvek enters the room, he moves himself sideway to the left of the corridor, tight against the wall.  He watches Krackor load the crossbow and follows the flight of the bolt until it is out of reach of his infra vision and waits to see if it will reveal something interesting.

OOC: Yes, I know Torvek is human but there exists some human mages that can see in the dark.

Not knowing that Torvek can see in the dark, Krackor is pleased with the light that is provided, he thinks of Kora at this point and wonders how she is doing!

((OOC:  Corym, you roll dice almost as bad as I do lol
22:20, Today: Krackor Steelfist rolled 1 using 1d10.  Because Corym is Rubbish at rolling dice.
GM, by roll high, as this is AD&D 2nd Ed, that means we roll LOW, correct? {{flutters eyelashes at the friendly GM}}))

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

Underground

Krackor's light-enchanted bolt sails into the darkness on the far side of the chasm. A moment later you hear the clatter of clay hitting stone, and light flares to life. The cavern is about a hundred feet across, and the chasm more or less bisects it. While this side of the room is mostly bare, on the far side there are a number of mounds and piles that are obviously artificial. There's a single exit, which is opposite you and a bit to your right.

You don't get long to examine things, because almost immediately there is a soft hissing from the other side of the room. Two heads, which had been mostly obscured by the ruined construction, push slightly into view, revealing snake bodies attached at the neck. A small bead of fire appears in front of one and races across the room. Reaching the space between Krackor and Torvek, it explodes with a dull roar, sending a wave of fire in all directions. A moment later, another enchantment washes over the pair, trying to lock up their muscles. ((ooc: I need 2 saves vs. spells from Krackor and Torvek. One against a 17 hp fireball (save for 8 damage), one against a hold person. The hold person save has a -1 penalty.))

((ooc: The roll was for whether the nagas surprised you, unfortunately. The surprise round is now done. I need everyone to roll initiative and provide actions.

The chasm is 10 feet wide

Both nagas are behind the stone and brick constructions and have 50% cover. These are spirit nagas, even though the picture is of a dark naga (the only naga picture in the Manual.

Map is below. One minor change: the exit tunnel is not as far to the right as it is on the map. It's closer to directly across from you. The vein of ore that was being mined was moving in a pretty straight line.))

"I won't sleep well until I know there are no more giants or trolls or ogres waiting to descend upon my town," Elvar says with a full-body shudder. He stares off into space for a moment, then pulls himself back to the present. "Harvests have been good this year. We can spare a little food. But of course, we have to ensure we're ready to face another siege. Of ice and snow if not ogre and troll."

In reply to DM (msg # 592):

Feeling magic roll over him, Krackor knew that he could shake the effects, his Vestments helping protect against the fire, his inate resistance meant he felt little of the fire and the 2nd spell had no effect.

((Ooc:  Krackor saved both.

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

With Crossbow in hand, Krackor attempts to blind the Nagas with another Continual light, there not being light where they were, he hoped it would work as the light would highlight his attackers.

((Ooc: Fires another Clay-tipped Crossbow Bolt, hitting Naga or the wall to break the almost fragile clay, to release the magical light or hurt the Naga!

22:19, Today: Krackor Steelfist rolled 9 using 1d10.  Initiative = 9+7-1=15
22:27, Today: Krackor Steelfist rolled 18 using 1d20+3.  Attack: Magical Crossbow. Hits AC -2

Krackor

((ooc: I will try to remember to record each die for fire spells going forward. In this case, let's call it 5 hp of fire damage for you, total.

You're not going to be able to blind someone with a light bolt. Blinding happens by centering the spell on their eyes, so that the white light moves with them. A bolt has light on the tip, which is promptly buried in the beast's flesh. This would be known, so if you want to change your action, feel free.))

((ooc: I didn't mean Blind in that manner, like if you are stood under a lamp post in the night, you can't see beyond the light but people can see you clearly from the dark.

Edit: Krackor saved too, so only takes 2hp damage from the fire :-) unless you are rounding up not down!Thank You, I misread, still in a lot of pain and pain killers, which are twisting my head, please call me out on this.))

Looks like I fail the save vs fireball but succeeded vs Hold Person.  Should be fine but am I still invisible?

((ooc: Yes, you're still invisible; thanks for flagging where you noted you cast the spell for me. Taking damage doesn't break the spell, only attacking (or casting a damaging spell) breaks it.

You do fail the save vs. fireball and take full damage. Fortunately, since you're invisible, you can't be targeted by the hold person.))

"Ouch, why am I standing so close to this dwarf." thinks Torvek as he douses himself and move carefully away from Krackor further while summoning an ally right next to the Naga that is not being attacked but Krackor.

OOC:
Initiative: 10-1+3= 13.
Action: Cast Laeral's Raging Griffon right next to the Naga that Krackor did not attack
Move: without breaking my ability to cast a spell, move away from Krackor, clockwise along the wall.

"To be frank, Lord Mayor, I cannot see that you have any hope of defense here. They have had their way with your people once, and will again unless we stop them. Lend us what aid you can and have the weakest among you escorted to Elturel for safety.  What folk remain to defend the town will thus be able to focus on the endeavor with their full attentions and your provisions will stretch farther for it. Lord Dhelt is well known to take pity on those in need and lend his shield to shelter them from harm. But if you have any great arms or spells let us have them so that we may pierce the foe to the uttermost. We are your most sound means of restoring peace to your realm."
