Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

“I am fine with exploring the tunnels, in part because Moradin can assist us. I understand that Glittergold cannot answer prayers to him in the tunnels unless he wants to be the one breaking the treaty. If that situation is acceptable to his followers, I am comfortable. However, if that restriction causes any concerns, I suggest we see if we can get Kurtulmak to reveal himself and break the treaty by our actions above ground. We could then take our battle below ground with the support of both Moradin and Glittergold.”

"You have likely stumbled upon the Glitterhovel waystation. It should be just below us. Having been abandoned for 150 years it is likely taken over by kobolds or the like. Kobold are not known for their craftsmanship, but they do pretty well with setting traps,  be wary."

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Chyresia's expertise is in the wild rather than in a tunnel underground, but she's not about to back down.

"I'm good," she says. "When do we start? We will need lights and stuff, right? Lanterns. Maybe rope? Food and water. How long will we be gone? Will we need a bed roll?"

She starts making a mental list of what she wants to take with her.

"How high are the tunnels?" she asks, wondering how useful her bow will be underground in a tunnel. It sticks up a good two feet above her head when she shoots it.

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Kinder goes behind the counter and retrieves a book of loose leaf paper sheets. He carefully pulls out six. With a pen and ink well he scratches out a voucher for 200 gold for each member of the team. He puts the name of each member on one of the vouchers then signs his signature to each. He explains that they would be honored anywhere in Glitterhovel. He says the merchant will reduce the voucher by the amount tendered then sign it. He asks that all vouchers be returned to him so that he can settle the accounts. He hands a voucher to everyone.

"I definitely need to replenish my quiver, but any suggestions for useful gear would be welcome as this will be my first time under ground."

Kylen is anxious to get going, but does not want to be unprepared. He decides to also keep an eye out for a better quality rapier. He has had his for years and it has seen better days.

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

After a whispered conversation with Kinder Terry comes to the group with a very excited twinkle in his eyes. "Master Cobble has generously offered to extend my employee discount to the whole party, thirty percent off purchases of alchemical and healing items." Terry pauses for breathe before ploughing on "I will ask my other mentor, the wizard Pumblechook, to cast a continual heatless flame enchantment on a small clip which we could either put in a lantern or wear to provide inexhaustible light. I won't mind carrying our light, even though it will make me a target I'm pretty useless stumbling around in the darkness."

Thinking about his lessons in enchantments his whirring mind remembers one of Pumblechooks many practical little tricks. "Kylen, stay where you are for a second, this will feel a little unusual but it will get the travel dust right off you." Focusing on a spot above Kylens head Terry raises one finger and quickly twirls it in a small circle. An almost invisible current of air swirls in a circle at the point of Terry's focus then travels downward. Any dust, pollen and even stains are drawn off of Kylen out to the air current which ceases once it reaches the floor leaving a faint, perfect circle of dirt on the floor and Kylens body and equipment remarkably clean. "If anyone else would like a quick spruce up just say, whenever I have utilised the prestidigitation cantrip that I used to light the stove it's one of the little tricks I can perform. I love magic!"

OOC: Sorry guys, strike the wand off the wishlish, my mistake. I'll buy us one once we're rich and famous :)

"Thank you Terry, if you can find me a broom I will be happy to get my grime off the floor. Master Cobble is there smithy that I could discuss the cost of commissioning a fine rapier? A couple of healing salves might be good as well, I prefer to not suffer injury, but I also know that life happens."

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Thank you, Master Cobble, for your generosity. A wand of healing  would be a powerful tool for us. I am happy to contribute to its purchase and would be honored to wield it to improve all of our health. I would understand if people prefer potions of healing, instead. I agree that a light would be most useful - if there is a threat to carrying it, I could share in that risk by taking a turn to hold it

Turning to Chry, she adds, “You need below the same as what you need above. Food, drink, bedroll, light, and rope should be good. Gnomes and dwarves are comfortable below ground and can help tall folks such as you. Stick near me, I can make the Underway more pleasant for you,” she says with a smile and wink. “Although you may want to try a crossbow instead of a longbow - there’s no telling about the size of the tunnel after 150 years, my pardon to the masters who built it.” She added that last bit since she did not want to offend the dwarves or gnomes who made the tunnel- it’s just that kobolds were unlikely to invest their efforts into its upkeep and time could have taken its toll.

The merchants who see my voucher will ask questions. Be kind but subtley dont answer them. Everything you turn up is confidential.  You deliver it only to me. The money is yours. I am trusting it is a solid investment. I need to get the shop opened but you are all welcome here anytime for anything. Just ask if you need information. *

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Kylen begins perusing the shop he is currently in. He finds a small healers kit that looks similar to the one his father carried. He has never been very learned at wound care, but it is good to be prepared. He takes the kit to the counter and says:

"Master Cobble, I would like to purchase this healers kit and if you would happen to have a potion that will heal small wounds, I would like to purchase that as well. It will give me a backup, if I am struggling with tending wounds."

He winks at the learned gnome as he makes the last statement.

"Also, I need to replace some arrows in my quiver and purchase some rope, can you direct me to a shop that can accommodate me. I would also like to speak to a smithy about commissioning a more balanced a frankly better-looking rapier. mine is does the job, but It is getting long in the tooth. I know it won't help me immediately, but I would love to at least know how much something like that would cost."

She breaks her voucher with Kinder in trade for a healing potion as well as a dose of antidote that Kinder proports will counter the effects of most animal bites as well as ingested toxins from plants and fungi. Kinder  explains that he only has five health potions left. He will make more, but time is required.

Talya then shakes hands with everyone before leaving. She insists she will be ready in the morning.

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Chyresia accepts her voucher with thanks and sets out to explore the gnomish town and its various shops and emporia. She's not seen much of the world outside her small village and certainly not a non-human settlement. She's thrilled to stroll about and take in the sights with wonder, making sure she keeps out of people's way and does not knock things over. She's used to be being slim and small, but here, she's a giant.

Over the next hour or so she seeks out various items to add to her pack that she deems useful for an expedition underground.

  • Potions of Healing (2d4+2) 3@50 = 150 gp 1 lb
  • Arrows 20 1 gp 1 lb
  • Grappling Hook 2 gp 4 lb
  • Lantern, hooded 5 gp 2 lb
  • Flask of oil 1 sp 1 lb
  • Mirror, steel 5 gp 1/2 lb
  • Iron spikes (10) 1 gp 5 lb
  • Hammer 1 gp 3 lb
  • Rations 4 days 2 gp 8 lb
  • Waterskin 2 sp 5 lb

When she's done she makes her way to the Golden Tankard where she orders a meal and a bed for the night. She doesn't want anything fancy, but a hot bath would be nice. She's been sleeping rough for a few days.

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Kylen follow Myrcury next door and speaks to the Smithy Hammerhol.

"Master Hammerhol, I would like to discuss what it would cost to commission a finer rapier then what I am currently using. Mine does the job it is intended to do, but it lacks estetics and is getting older and starting to show wear. I also perform and so I desire a side arm that has a little flare, but still sports a keen blade and a superior balance."

Following his discussion with the Smithy, Kylen purchases:

10 arrows to refill his quiver: 5sp

50' Silk Rope: 10gp

4 days rations: 2gp

A waterskin: 2sp

These items are added to his Healer kit 50gp and his cure light potion 50gp.

He then goes to the Golden Tankard and rents a room for a week. Once checked in Kylen unpacks his gear, stash his performance cloths and his sap to make room for the new equipment. He  unpacks and repacks his gear several times. Once satisfied he decides to go into the dining room and have a bite to eat and then heads to bed.

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

Terry talks to Kinder for a while and manages to beg a few further favours from his mentor. Terry covers the cost of the material components and retrieves a vial of fine ruby dust from a safe in the back room. Getting a simple bull clip Terry will carefully sprinkle the red powder over the clip and as Kinder prays to Garl Glittergold and his hands light on fire. Caressing the bull clip the amethyst coloured flame engulfs the clip and stays, gently flickering without smoke or any scent of burning. Wearing a delighted smile Terry clips it to his shirt sleeve.

He will then process the others purchases of healing potions and as a store employee validates the vouchers. Considering the discount he charges Talya for one, Chyresia 105 gp for three, Kylen 35 gp for one and purchases the last one himself. To his own pile of purchases he will add two flasks of holy water, one clay pot of alchemists fire and two vials of acid.

When Twylyt mentions potions he will pipe up "Have you thought about scrolls? Arcane spells like mage armor will only be available for you as a potion or an oil of magic weapon would make any one weapon more destructive and accurate but for half the price you could get spells that you can cast like bless, protection from evil, shield of faith. Also, potions of enlarge person are very popular amongst biggun fighters, it increases their strength and lets them keep enemies at bay and go toe to toe with large things like bears and ogres." He will go with her to the shop that carries potions but instead buys magically infused ink. If she likes Terry will then escort her to a secluded park where rocks are covered in soft, bioluminescent moss and water trickles down the walls and gathers in a small, perfectly circular pool. A statue of Garl Glittergold sits with his toes in the water, a hugely content smile on his face while he strokes a rabbit. Stone benches ring the pool, sitting in a carpet of thick green moss. Terry shows Twylyt the road tunnel that leads to the inn and then heads back to Kinders shop. He then settles onto the stool of a work bench and with extreme care replicates two spells from his spell book onto a long piece of waxed parchment.

That night Terry will join the others for dinner at the inn and will share drink and a good warm meal. Returning home he gets his bags ready for the following day, he will put each bottle into a thick woollen sock and then will place them in his sachel bag with his spell book and a couple days rations, some carrots and a waterskin. The rest of his kit and some vegetables for Wilda are in his backpack with a bedroll and a crossbow bolt case strapped to the bag and with his crossbow he'll be ready to go. The next day he tells his Ma that he is going on a short trip with a band of adventurers for a couple of days and then will head off to Talyas shop to meet up.

Terrys spells for tomorrow are:
lvl 0: detect magic, detect poison, ray of frost
lvl 1: color spray, summon monster 1

Added to terry's inventory are:
1x potion of cure light wounds
2x holy water
1x alchemists fire
2x acid
1x scroll with 1x mage armor and 1x reduce person spell
1x Bull clip enchanted with continual flame spell
2x hard tack rations
3x vegetable rations for Wilda

OOC: Making the scroll drains Terry of 2 experience points

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

"Thank you, Terry. See you at the Golden Tankard," after being shown to the secluded park.  Despite his excellent points, she decided to buy the potions rather than experiment with the scrolls. Consistent with her father's very dwarven mind, making something into existence was preferable to reading something into being, so potions were well-accepted in his household.  Besides, Twylyt had played around with enough liquids and herbs to secretly heal her brothers that she was also familiar with the concept behind them - a dash of this, a splash of that, and a prayer to Moradin were the usual ingredients.

She was very pleased with the secluded park.  The verdant green moss in particular brought back memories of Deep Gap, including one particular evening when she tested out its softness with a very hansom dwarf adventurer that was temporarily in town. Sighing, she pushed away the thoughts of his bushy beard and large eyebrows to focus on Moradin and the spells she would prepare for the adventure. She considered switching out Light for another but decided that the party really should have many ways of seeing their way forward and she was not certain what they would find down there. After spending well over an hour there, she departed to the Golden Tankard for food and rest.

OOC: DM, do you add the purchases and update spells and HPs? Thanks!

Chapter 1: Glitterhovel

A big concern is remaining secret and not attracting attention, so the group tries their best to approach Shady Lane and the sewer entrance without making a scene. They probably fail as there are eyes everywhere in this part of town. Though once below the street, the concern of eyes drastically reduces. The sewers are a series of underground canals with drains dropping down from the buildings above. Some of the drains have maintenance access ladders, most do not. The drain pipes are large enough to enter, but the space would be tight, even for a gnome. The canals are ten feet wide in most places. There are walkways along the canals but not on both sides. It can be challenging to navigate. Myrcury and Talya know the way and within twenty minutes the group is standing next to a locked iron gate, which magically unlocks as Myrcury approaches it. The gate opens with a loud whiney squeal. There is a second gate that opens when the first is opened with equal squeezing. The group quickly passes through then closes the gates. Talya locks them as they procede down into a very dark descending passage. Myrcury shines his lantern down. Gnomes can see quite well in low light situations, but the depths still offer a shadowy, hard to see landscape. A roughly cut tunnel descends at a fairly steep grade. The tunnel is just wide enough that the group walks single file.

They start down but do not get far before finding the way blocked by a collapsed tunnel.

Myrcury quickly demonstrates how to use a rope and iron spike ladder of sorts that Talya and he constructed. He scampers up easily due to experience. What he makes look easy is not. The climb is about thirty feet.

The ladder is just a knotted rope that hangs down the steep slope beside a series of iron spikes that have been driven into cracks in the rock. They offer firm hand holds. The ladder looks tricky.

Each PC should make a climbing check. The DC is 10 with a +2 circumstance bonus because Myrc is coaching you. If that check fails, make a dex check to catch yourself and avoid damage. If that succeeds you can try to climb again. If it fails you fall to the ground and take 1d6 damage. Then you can try again.
