I haven't done the math but if I wanted to do a WW1/2 game how would only war stand up as a candidate system. Other than re writing some of the guns and banning a lot of the other tech is there anything thing else about it that binds it too tight to the 40k verse?

Was vaguely considering converting it for war/starcraft also.

Not sure about only war but i have seen the Black Crusade uses for other settings. Corruption was stress and led to derangements instead of mutations and a few tweaks like that but nothing major. Some skills just need different wording so its doable.

That seems like a convoluted way of getting back to Insanity rules in the only 40k system that doesn't have them.

I like the concept of downgrades BC has for weapons & armour, but even there OW has variant pattern rules that could be used the same way.

That sort of answers the question all on it's own. Black Crusade seems like it would be the worst of the 40k systems to switch settings in (What do you even do with the Chaos god aptitudes?) so if that works then any of the others will work better.

I think it would definitely work. I hacked OW for post-apoc (or am still messing with doing so) because it's the cleanest mix of melee and modern ranged combat. I didn't change a thing. As mentioned, simply use the variant rules as guidelines for designing different weapons.
