I heard this and thought, so the Devil finally caught up with him.
Had a massive stroke, Hermorage type I believe. Hope he did not suffer much before the end.

RIP: Charlie Daniels...Devil stole his soul.

Back in the early 80s they (the Charlie Daniels Band) came and played at my high school.  I wasn't, and am still not, a huge country music fan but we got out of class for the free concert and that was good enough for me.  I don't recall any of the other songs they played, but they closed the concert with The Devil went Down to Georgia.  The only song of theirs I knew.  The best part was instead of singing the PC/radio version of the lyrics at the end, he sang original "I told you once you sonofablueberry" version.

The rest of the song was quickly drowned out by every single kid getting to their feet and cheering!  Oh our principal was hopping mad!  Mr. Daniels said something to the effect that he knew they wouldn't get away with singing that early in the concert so they made it their finale just for that reason.

We never got another free concert like that for the remainder of my high school years.  Still worth it.

RIP: Charlie Daniels...Devil stole his soul.

It was in his later years that he changed it to "son of a gun".  Nit a big country fan, but I've heard it on rock stations, too.  I like the original lyrics the best, too.
RIP, Charlie Daniels.

I'm pretty sure I heard the son of a gun version back in the 80s.  They had to have the clean version for most radio stations.

Just double checked, the compilation CD Billboard Top Hits 1979 has the clean version.

Maybe it's my age, but I also remember the Ballad of the Uneasy Rider. Rather against type for a C&W band, but a hell of a song.

Ooh, I loved Ballad of the Uneasy Rider. And I think The Devil Went Down to Georgia ranks in the top 10, maybe top 5, of all time songs for me.

He also was part of the 'Marshall Tucker Band' at one point.
