RIP Chadwick Boseman

According to CNN he died of colon cancer.
To those unfamiliar with the name, he played the Black Panther in the Marvel movies, most recently in his long career.
He was 43 at the time of his death.

RIP Chadwick Boseman

To me the Black Panther he made was one of my favorites. What a huge loss to family and fans.  A good man, he gave us many hours of enjoyment.  Bless him on his way.

RIP Chadwick Boseman

For a guy his age, he had a really impressive resume.  Black Panther was his recognized role, but he also had several other critically acclaimed roles (Jackie Robinson in '42' and Thurgood Marshall in 'Marshall' immediately come to mind.)

RIP Chadwick Boseman

More recent than Black Panther was the role he played in the Netflix Original Movie, Five Bloods.
It is a sad day.  He was a good actor. I have to wonder, now, how they are going to handle Black Panther 2.

Shuri was Black Panther for a while.
Could go with a Azari, different mother of course. Maybe she was concieved while he was abroad in college.
Could introduce Kevin Cole and eventually have him become White Tiger.
Could introduce a time travelling K'Shamba or just have him be from an earlier time period instead of 2099.
Ngozi would be interesting minus the Venom symbiote and that butt ugly costume.

Wouldn't mind seeing Hunter, the real White Wolf introduced. The one from the Avengers Black Panther's Quest.

Shuri is the most likely candidate if they continue with BP2. They may cancel it.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

Or they may simply recast the role.  They've kind of set up Black Panther to be a significant member in the upcoming phases of the MCU, and while Chadwick Boseman defined the character for the screen, it wouldn't be the first time they've recast a major role.  I think the character and the film have proven far too popular to just write them out of the story.  Having Shuri take the part is definitely an option, but I felt like they were setting her up as a support character to gain status in her own right (a more active equivalent to Pepper Potts, basically), so they would have to retool the character arc.

Given how long Boseman had been fighting cancer, they've probably already put a lot of thought into contingency plans for this.  Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

Why not? They recast Brody between Iron Man 1 and 2 and nobody really cared. As much as Chadwick was vital to Black Panthers success there is a long history of recasting super heroes as time goes on. Spider man has had three iterations, they recast new Batman’s and James Bond’s all the time and it doesn’t hurt those franchises.  It sucks but do you really think the Marvel Movie Machine is going to stop because of this?

I will say silver lining that he got to not only be part of one of the biggest blockbusters of all time but center stage for pushing a black superhero into the modern spotlight. Not since Blade has there been a titan black hero so that was a huge accomplishment on his part.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

There have already been rumors that Marvel was considering having Shuri take up the mantle in some form and be in an upcoming all women team movie that would also feature the rumored upcoming female Thor introduction into the MCU.

They might just tweak that to have her be mainline BP.

Brody was demanding more money than the star. Plus Brody was a sidekick.

The only titular star they ever recast was Hulk‘s and that was after Hulk became at best a costar.

Replacing Cadwick now would be like recasting Tony Stark instead of killing him off.

Spider-Man has never been recasted in the same universe.

Black Panther ain’t got the star appeal of Batman or James Bond. Until Civil War Black Panther was only ever known to die hard comic nerds and comic shop employees.

You really need to go back and read a thousand times better; no one said Marvel movies would stop only the dumbest person in the universe would think that.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

Point of order, it's Rhodey.  Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes.

And not that I have a dog in the fight, but Black Panther is a mantle. It can be passed to another, as we have seen in the movies. Whether or not that means they will recast, I don't know. But the important thing is that Chadwick left his mark on history as the original Black Panther. He set an example for many people and gave us an incredible performance as a black superhero that will has already had an indelible impact on our culture. Now, as tragic as the circumstances are, someone else will get the chance to take up the mantle and have the opportunity to make their own mark.

I thought he was talking about the actor.

As for making their mark, are those claw marks?

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

The 'why' of recasting a role is not particularly relevant.  The fact that they've done it--and it worked out really well--means that they will doubtless consider the option.

If they recast, they have the option to handle it in similar fashion as they did with Rhodey...it's a new face with the same name and no big deal.  They don't really need to explain anything, most people who follow the MCU closely enough to notice the recasting already know why.  If they transfer the mantle to someone else, they have to spend part of the movie explaining why, and they don't have the benefit of Chadwick Boseman there to shoot his part.  That said, if they do it right, they only need someone to match his physicality, as they'd be adding CGI details and the costume.  But to just arbitrarily transfer the title of Black Panther to another character would be a really jarring event that would need some kind of explanation.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

Opening scene has Black Panther in costume thus no need for Chadwick. He dies in battle. Takes a matter of seconds, if they want they can drag it out.

They could do that but instead of opening the movie it could be a post/mid-credit scene on the movie that comes out directly before BP2.

They don't have to explain it.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

I just hope Disney has dropped the whole idea of using CGI to resurrect dead celebrities. I'm not even a fan of using extensive CGI to "de-age" actors as I would rather they tap young actors to build them up instead of fishing from the same well but seeing Peter Cushing or Carrie Fischer was very disturbing in my opinion.

Either recast the actor or push the mantle onto another character but let the dead lie in peace.

I wouldn't oppose that if they want to show him passing the mantle as he dies in someone's arms.

Re: RIP Chadwick Boseman

From Michael B Jordan's Facebook page:

I’ve been trying to find the words, but nothing comes close to how I feel. I’ve been reflecting on every moment, every conversation, every laugh, every disagreement, every hug…everything.

I wish we had more time.

One of the last times we spoke, you said we were forever linked , and now the truth of that means more to me than ever. Since nearly the beginning of my career, starting with All My Children when I was 16 years old you paved the way for me. You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching, learning and constantly motivated by your greatness.

I wish we had more time.

Everything you’ve given the world … the legends and heroes that you’ve shown us we are … will live on forever. But the thing that hurts the most is that I now understand how much of a legend and hero YOU are. Through it all, you never lost sight of what you loved most. You cared about your family , your friends, your craft, your spirit. You cared about the kids, the community, our culture and humanity. You cared about me. You are my big brother, but I never fully got a chance to tell you, or to truly give you your flowers while you were here.

I wish we had more time.

I'm more aware now than ever that time is short with people we love and admire. I’m gonna miss your honesty, your generosity, your sense of humor, and incredible gifts. I’ll miss the gift of sharing space with you in scenes. I’m dedicating the rest of my days to live the way you did. With grace, courage, and no regrets. “Is this your king!?” Yes . he . is!  Rest In Power Brother.
