Dream Sequence:
On the other hand, I just saw this in a Players Wanted post:
quote:
- The game is located in the Contemporary category.
- It has 7 posts.
- Its last post was made at 05:00, Thursday, 01 January 1970.
... so apparently RPoL is about twice as old as the World Wide Web.
So this is a fun bit of computer science trivia. In computer science/programming to get around really annoying things about dates and times (because of things like time zones and daylight savings times and what not...it's a mess actually figuring out what time something happened) computer science nerds created a new metric called epoch time which is the number of seconds that have passed since a given date/time in CST. One simple function converts any date/time into a number that you can easily do calculations on. What is 2 weeks added to Jan 27th, 2008 is kind of tricky without doing a lot of conversions so with epoch time you convert everything to a standardized number, do your various calculations and what not, and then when you're all done you can pop it back out of epoch time to make it human readable again.
(For example the current epoch time is 1599092842, not an easy thing to eyeball.
ANYWAY the reason why I bring this up is that the whole point is that number (1599092842) is the number of seconds from a set date and that date is January 1st, 1970.
So if you ever see that specific date pop up in a place that isn't probably correct, that is because you're ending up with a default epoch time.
