How old is RPOL.net?

I saw a notice a week ago noting it was rpol's Birthday, but I didn't see an age anywhere.

Just curious, how old is this great site?

How old is RPOL.net?

The background FAQ says it was founded "several years ago" in a post dated July 2008.  That's as specific as I can find.  :)

How old is RPOL.net?

Clicking the RUBB update link at the bottom left of the front page shows the version history for the site, which includes the following:
quote:
Version 1.0.0 - 25 August 2000

Major:

Initial release.  No real version numbering was implemented at this stage, and various sections were unfinished, such as banning.

So, the site was over twenty years old last month.

About time it got a job...

Not sure about the normal site, but on responsive, if you go into your Preferences it'll actually tell you what date you signed up, now. =)

How old is RPOL.net?

On the other hand, I just saw this in a Players Wanted post:

quote:
  • The game is located in the Contemporary category.
  • It has 7 posts.
  • Its last post was made at 05:00, Thursday, 01 January 1970.

... so apparently RPoL is about twice as old as the World Wide Web.

How old is RPOL.net?

I was on Playbyweb for a bit..it didn't suit me though...EZboards  were rgeat, the set up was like   These boards, everything in one place. By Hackers  killed    all the EZ boards, and they never  came back. I bet i was on , like....6 sites  fo EZ Boards  playing FR DND.

then i found this   place to  pick up gaming  slack.

One thing that is to be noted? All sites  have Games,  all sites  have games that  stick around and 'fly-by-night' game that are lucky to last a Month or two. What makes this  site better is the clean  set up,, and work the Admins  put in. Dcie  roller is   simple  to use  and  covers  everything you need..PMs ... GM oversight on thier games to do  what they  want to set the game up.

i'm in  one game  on another site.. i am there ,,ONLY  for that game m sicne it came from another site years and years ago ( i tried to get them to come here!).

the site's a mess, you have to did  throughthread  upon thread to  find your  game( i have to have a Link that takes me right to my game).... The PMs  are near as good as here... The thread  sent up is worse...

I guess what i am tryign to say, that after  my Many, many years of  PBP, This is the site to be!

How old is RPOL.net?

I to came here from Playbyweb - I found it easier to use this site, more players and better community feel. Been back to PBW a few times, but never stay long as they just lack the games I like to play. Though I know a few others who use both sites.
I been here : Before Sat 22 Oct 2005 - how much before the Beta site does not say ... Still almost 15 years.

How old is RPOL.net?

I've been here since June of 2002 - I know that because I signed up and set up a board straight away so I could move a game from PlayByWeb.

But the site records say I joined before October 23 2005.  Which is correct, but not as accurate as my records.  :)

I feel like I came over in 2002 maybe, from the site The Pork ... which I think used to be called The Park.

Anyone remember those? A Google search didn't find anything.

So this is a fun bit of computer science trivia. In computer science/programming to get around really annoying things about dates and times (because of things like time zones and daylight savings times and what not...it's a mess actually figuring out what time something happened) computer science nerds created a new metric called epoch time which is the number of seconds that have passed since a given date/time in CST. One simple function converts any date/time into a number that you can easily do calculations on. What is 2 weeks added to Jan 27th, 2008 is kind of tricky without doing a lot of conversions so with epoch time you convert everything to a standardized number, do your various calculations and what not, and then when you're all done you can pop it back out of epoch time to make it human readable again.

(For example the current epoch time is 1599092842, not an easy thing to eyeball.

ANYWAY the reason why I bring this up is that the whole point is that number (1599092842) is the number of seconds from a set date and that date is January 1st, 1970.

So if you ever see that specific date pop up in a place that isn't probably correct, that is because you're ending up with a default epoch time.

Re: How old is RPOL.net?

Every now and then in a game there was a post made that I was like the 3rd or 4th player, been in a bit but it popped up saying game was created in 1969.  It was a weird glitch.  Noone ever made the post.  It was like the 'matrix' randomly made it.  You could not delete it either unless you deleted the game entirely.  We just relegated it to the last spot and told people to ignore it.  So if you had 4 pages of game it would be on page 4 eventually.

Re: How old is RPOL.net?

The legends say that there has always been a place called Arpelnett, though where exactly this demesne has existed is a matter of conjecture and it was an almost impossible journey for mortals to traverse...and survive.

Then the sage Jase of blessed name discovered the way to breach the walls of the aether and to open Arpelnett to those of Terra. Some say he traveled the Digital Highways, others that he climbed the Interwebs, still others that he plumbed the depths of a series of virtual tubes.

Whatever route he forged, he has thrown open the portals to any adventurer that would explore the many facets of this place, provided they abide by a few simple rules. Those that transgress the rules are banished to the Chamber of Lost Souls to languish under the implacable gaze of bigbadron.
