That "why didn't I pick it up" moment...

I'm just having a face-palming moment due to an old RPG decision.

Five years ago, FFG started publishing their Star Wars RPG line. Initially, I was intrigued and bought Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny rulebooks... I even purchased some initial supplements for them. But then, I realized I wasn't sure about the weird system and was turned off by the amount of supplements these games were getting (most of which seemed actually necessary to buy). So, I gave up, sold the whole she-bang and forgot about these games.

Now, for some strange reason, I'm feeling like trying to play these games again. Especially Force and Destiny, as it focuses on Force users and their mysticism (apparently). But currently, the books are hard to find, so buying this stuff again, even if possible, would cost me twice as 5 years ago... And, for weird licensing reasons, FFG isn't allowed to publish these books in PDFs.

*groans* Ever had one of those moments? Also, do you guys know any other sci-fi or fantasy games that would put some good focus on mystics, morality etc.?

Oh so many times...

Was in a store once with Star Wars Saga Edition 60-80 percent off on clearance, I should have bought the whole thing right there, haha

Once saw the Alternity Gamma World book like $4.99

Changeling the Dreaming kith books on clearance, like 50% off

I was just discussing with somebody I saw the Scion 1e books marked down a whole lot at one point

Aberrant and Trinity books were like $9 each at one point in one store I used to frequent

A LOT of 2E books, though a lot of my 2E stuff got stolen years ago so I don't know I'd necessarily be better off there.

I wouldn't necessarily have played these games (though I did play Aberrant), but I've come to regret all of these and I'm sure there's many others I've forgotten about.

Lol, when I was young and didn't have a lot of money I would trade books in for other books, then we would switch systems again.

Oh man, 3rd ed GURPS.  So many extremely good source books that I skipped because "I don't need [COUNTRY/HISTORICAL ERA] source book, I can always get it later".

At least SJGames is putting them out as pdf and print-on-demand now so I've been expanding my digital library.

Okay, I went crazy and bought about two thirds of FFG's Star Wars books... Some shops still have some leftovers. I spent over 500 bucks on them today - but if I waited a few months, it'd get even harder to get them...

Unfortunately, about one third of these books seems to be unavailable at stores anymore. Drat! And it includes one book I actually *owned* five years ago...

I only hope somebody will play this game with me!!!

I did that recently with Star Fleet Battles.  I think it's a combination of nostalgia and some form of closer.   It's something that we had during the "good old days", but never really got to enjoy.

I tend to feel that way with 2nd and 3rd edition Shadowrun....I can relate.

... that will be quite an expensive "closer", though!

Agh! What have I done? o_O

I have more experience with the opposite end of that spectrum...buying the Amber Diceless rules a little over ten years ago, and not having used them once since then.  That's a little more my speed...

That said, I'm glad I've got them.  If I ever decide to run my own game on here, I plan on adapting very heavily from them because that seems to be the most effective way to handle conflict resolution in a play-by-post environment.  But I don't particularly enjoy being a GM, and never really have, so the odds are good that I won't ever end up using them.

In the modern age I have never once had that feeling. Because I am obviously so wealthy that I purchased all of the PDF's on my computer or personally bought all the hard covers and scanned them in myself. It is the only possible explanation for how I am down to play basically any system. The only possible one.

Inversely I use my Amber and Lords Of Gossamer And Shadow about once a year when a new game starts up and then immediately stop using them within four weeks when the game dies due to GM implosion.

This has been going on for the entire twenty-five years I've been trying to play Amber...

GM implosion... now that's something interesting :)

BTW. I've managed to find all of the SW books sans one... I've spent nearly 1000 bucks... Now I really need to play the heck out of these games, right..?

Yeah, either they simply disappear never to be heard from again, or they end the game citing how everything in their life suddenly, and without warning, fell apart for absolutely no discernible reason*.

* Okay, a few have had really good and understandable reasons, but most... it really feels like they were starting a game to have a distraction from all the crazy stress in their life and the the difficulties they were under, and of course, running a game just adds stress and difficulty to an already overburdened system.

I mean, that's why I keep not managing to start a game here on RPoL.  The time to write up everything I'd need to write up, I just don't have it (not if I'm going to be a responsible adult).

Sounds like you should totes get in on a game.  Or run one.  ;)

I bought that too.  Have run two games with it.  One, on another site, lasted a year.  The other, here, ran for 15 years before it reached its (semi-)planned* conclusion - and for months afterwards, I was twitchy and irritable because I didn't have anything to post in my Amber game... :(

*ie: I had a rough idea for how it would end.  Player actions changed the details and the nature of that ending.
