Assorted House Rules

This is a compilation of the house rules I use as they've come up so far:

----

Read Magic is a class ability for magic-users in this game - no memorization of Read Magic necessary.

----

Magic-users and illusionists can cast cantrips, at will, equal to their Intelligence score per day. Cantrips do not replace 1st-level spells in this game.

----

Maximum hit points at 1st level.  Roll normally after that, disregarding 1s.

----

UA specialization is available for single-classed fighters.  Double specialization is not.

----

House rule regarding unconscious characters and healing:

If any unconscious character is healed before reaching the -3 mark, it is not necessary for that character to rest for a week.  However, it does take two healing spells or potions (regardless of the dice rolled) to get an unconscious character up and back into the fray, if need be.  One would simply get them mobile enough to go home.

Any character who falls to -4 must follow the rule requiring a week of rest.

----

Another house rule regarding healing:

A spell-caster who casts any healing spell will heal a minimum of 1 hit point per level.  Roll normally, and raise any low number to the minimum (don't add points to the roll).

That doesn't apply to potions, however.

----

Training and training costs (when reaching a new level) are not used in this game.  On-the-job training works just fine.

----

When firing a bow or crossbow, if a 1 is rolled by the player, the DM will also roll a d20.  Another 1 means that the weapon's string has snapped - any other result is a wild shot (possibly hitting an unintended target).

----

The Unearthed Arcana level limits for higher attribute scores are used in this game.

----

If you guys can think of any others that I should post here, please let me know.

Re: Assorted House Rules

Because this game has grown so much, and many of our players are using the OSRIC rules instead of the original Players Handbook, to avoid confusion between players I am permanently adopting the OSRIC conversion rates for currency:

1 platinum piece  =   5 gold pieces
1 gold piece      =   2 electrum pieces
1 gold piece      =  10 silver pieces
1 gold piece      = 100 copper pieces

So:  100 cp  =  10 sp  =  2 ep  =  1 gp  =  1/5 pp

In case some of you wondered why my math looked off lately as I handed out treasure.  I still expect those of you using the PHB to buy equipment between adventures to use the PHB rates.  Thanks.
