Homebrew D&D without feat taxes

I like D&D, but often it seems like the biggest monster in the game is the system itself.

I came across a very interesting online article called The Elephant in the Room , and it merges or gets rid out most of the feat taxes. I'd love to give it a whirl, preferably in a low magic setting.

Homebrew D&D without feat taxes

In reply to Ice Raven (msg # 1):

Feat taxes are subjective anyway. I never take them as a player, if I'm given the option not to, and I don't see any problems.

Edit: Lame feats required for better ones are somewhat of a problem in certain editions and versions, but I used to enjoy finding the upsides that I felt were overlooked. The edition I prefer has "feat taxes" that aren't required but seem too good to pass up. Those are the ones I pass up.

Shape shade, Yes, that is what I was referring to.

Engine, yeah, would you take Dodge if it was a stand alone feat? I wouldn't
If it was +2 I would consider it.

Homebrew D&D without feat taxes

In reply to Ice Raven (msg # 4):

Probably not, but in looking at trying to make a Whirlwind Attack fighter (a pleasantly futile task, I know, trying to make a 3.5 fighter worth playing) it made sense to me as part of a whole, making one effective against both groups and individual targets.

I was glad to leave that behind, though.
