Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game

Greetings,

This post has been modified from its original version to reflect the evolution of my request.

2, Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game. I'm fascinated by this system and interested in the world. I like the storytelling mechanic and the idea of playing short episodic sessions so that it feels like the comic strips or episodes on the animated series. Lots of heroics, bold colors, only a passing resemblance to actual medieval history, and hints of the fantastical around many corners are elements I'm looking for. I want to play a bold Knight and attend jousts, tournaments, feasts, hunts, and go on special missions for King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. The ups and downs of courtly love would also be fun, since I've never managed to do that in a game. I know it is a cliché, but I've never actually played a character who rescues a Damsel in Distress. I'd like to play out that cliché just once.

4, Backswords and Bucklers.

Posting Rate, I'd like this to be roughly once a day, or once every 1-2 days. Weekends would be off.

I'd rather play alongside a party. I think that would make the game more fun. If nobody else wants to play the Prince Valiant game I'd be willing to play one-on-one with the right GM.

Backswords and Bucklers sounds great, I'd love to join that game whenever it happens.

Some Systems I'd Like to Try Out

I've narrowed the field down to those two games. Hopefully a GM will be interested in picking one of them up. Would it be helpful to the uninitiated if I shared more information about the two mentioned systems or their implied settings?

Some Systems I'd Like to Try Out

Giving this a quick bump.

A little more about what makes the Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game different. The primary mechanic of the game is the coin toss. The different abilities, skills, and equipment your character possesses will combine in different ways to generate the various coin piles for the tasks the character wishes to accomplish. When asked to test a skill the player tosses the coins in the indicated pile. Any coins that come up heads are counted as a success. Compare the number of successes against the Target Number of the task being attempted.

The other interesting feature that separates this system from others is the emphasis on episodic play. The expectation is that each session will be a self contained story, or a chapter in a larger story. The idea is that each player takes a chapter or episode and runs it for the group. Then, next session, a different player runs the next chapter or episode for the group. This way each player has an opportunity to be a Storyteller without the pressure of coming up with a whole campaign. The Main Storyteller is responsible for keeping play even and fair so that the episodes everyone plays are all moving towards the group's primary goal. I can see this style of play working really well on RPoL. By the time a single episode has ended the group will be ready to face a different scenario. The natural break will also serve as a great time to bring in new players for for players who have lost interest to gracefully exit.

If there is enough interest I'd like to try that group story telling option. Hopefully we can find someone willing run this game.

In reply to InQueli (msg # 2):

I apologize. I am taking Backswords and Bucklers out of the running for now. I may end up running that game myself in the future, but I want to concentrate on finding someone willing to run the Prince Valiant RPG at this time. I wish you luck in finding good games to play!

I have updated the first post to reflect these changes.

I'm beginning to suspect that this may be a case of me being more interested than most in this system. I'm no stranger to this when it comes to RPGs.

The link above is to an interesting article about the system. Also, you will find a link to a free PDF of cheat sheets for the rules. These are meant to serve as an aid for character creation or during play. Perhaps reading the article or the PDF might help drum up some interest in a light-hearted RPG game using this setting.

I still hold out hope that there is someone interested in this old system who just waits to know that there are others willing to play.

Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game

I adore Prince Valiant but just started running two other games. Had I the time to do so, I would love to run it.

Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game

Since I saw your original post, Wiglaf, I've been reading the old Prince Valiant comics and was reminded of how much I liked them as a kid. The artwork impresses me even more now as an adult, since I can better appreciate Foster's amazing draftsmanship and sense for the cinematic.

I also started reading the gamebook, which I've had a PDF copy of for years as a curiosity but never really cracked open. Now that I'm looking over it, I find I enjoy the simplicity of the system.

I'd like to start with me in the role of Storyteller, at least to begin with, if we choose to round-robin the Storyteller role. I can't promise 100% canon accuracy, as I'm still in the first volume of the collected comics, and I recently subscribed to King Syndicate Features' website to keep up with the currently published strip. However, between the information provided in the rulebook and my general knowledge of Arthurian myth and history, I think I can do an adequate job.

Alyse (and anyone else who might see this thread and be interested), you'd certainly be welcome to join, as well. Wiglaf, if it turns out you're the only one who's interested in playing, I'm equally amenable to running a solo game.

Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game

A pleasure to meet you Muledonkey. :)

I think that your proposal sounds like exactly what I am looking for. I'm not a lore hound myself. I'm using the rulebook as the main source of my knowledge while I also start from the beginning. So no worries there. I'm mostly after the general feeling of the setting. You can even make changes to aspects of the lore if it suits you and the story you'd like to tell. I'm not expecting that we meet the prince himself or heavily interact with the other main characters. Nor am I looking to 're-tell' the story with our characters as the main ones. I'm happy to play a different plot based upon what you want to create as long as it exists within that world. Does that help or make sense?

I'd love it if Alyse and thattripletguy would join us. It is always more to have companions along the way.
