There needs to be a drop down box to select which character you are posting as. I always have to hit post, then get an error and THEN the drop down is available.

The drop-down menu always displays for me, whether I am a player or the GM. What browser and OS are you using?

Your Browser is probably the issue. I've never heard of the one you are using. I use Chrome on my android phone and the drop down appears for me.

Does the drop-down list display as a drop-down and just doesn't work?  Or do you not even have the option?  Just see "post as: CharacterName" on whatever your background color is.

I'm running android 10 and just downloaded and ran the Brave browser on the default settings and was able to see and use the drop-down menu.  At least as a GM.  I don't have any active games with multiple characters at the moment to test with, but I don't think that bit of UI is different from what I remember.

For me, I'm on Chrome desktop, Win8, and the Dropdown doesn't exist until after I hit either Preview or Post.  The Subject Line doesn't exist either.

Then once it errors, it displays the Dropdown selector and the Subject Line, but if you hit Preview there is no possibility to change the Character you're posting as until after you post and then Edit.

Also, once you preview, the Preview As selector becomes available.

Everything works fine in games where I am a GM, and games where I only control 1 Character (naturally).  I cannot confirm in it's just the one game, as I have only one game where I have multiple Characters but am not also a GM.

Responsive, or old site, EE?

I'm also running Chrome desktop, Win10, and it's working properly on responsive in all the games where I have multiple characters, with or without also being a GM.

Edit: Chrome did have an update recently, in case you didn't have that applied.

[EDIT]
This might be linked to another issue I just discovered and posted in the main thread

Replying in threads with multiple characters

I now have two games where I control multiple characters, I'm still only having this issue in one game.

The differences between the games; the number of characters I control, 6 in the problem game, 2 in the game that works correctly; number of PCs and NPCs, in the problem game there are hundreds of distinct characters, PCs and NPCs in the "Make this message private to (post will appear in the Private Messages area):" list and it truncates after 24 lines worth of PC and NPC names; in the properly working game there are only 4 lines worth of PCs and NPCs.  Also the problem game is old, over 8 years old, the working game is just over a year old.

I use Win 8 Chrome.  I'll check later today with Firefox to see if it replicates.

[EDIT]
I checked, same problem in Firefox.  It looks like it's the number of NPCs and PCs that might be causing it.

I suppose that it /could/ be caused by breaking into triple-digit characters, maybe?

I don't think it's the age of the game, as I just checked this in a game that's also over 8 years old, with 83 visible characters (and probably another dozen hidden), and everything works properly there, including not truncating the Private options. (Win10, Chrome, Responsive)

That's my guess, it looks like it's shoving the response box as far up into the top of the "applet" as it can, probably to make as much room as possible for the "Make this message private" list.

It's also only doing it because on Responsive it doesn't open a new page to respond, it opens a response/reply window right there at the bottom of the page and that window isn't making enough room for the full list of N/PCs you could possibly make a PM to.  If I force the quote or reply to open in a new window, or it reloads to error out, this problem goes away, the new page makes the 'reply window box' properly sized.

Might want to check what zoom percentage your browser is set at, lol I have vision trouble and set mine to 133 but for rpol I drop it down to 100% or 90% if I need to.  I was having the same problem as listed above but realised it was my browser zoom not a RPol problem. ;)

100%.  No, it's really the shear numbers of characters exceeding the applet box size, because if I make the post box larger (garb and drag the corner), it shunts the PM list off the page, below the bottom of the page.

If you're on responsive, try it yourself, hit "Post a Reply", grab the lower right corner and pull the box to make it larger, it doesn't increase the page size (expanding the scroll bar) it just shoves the quick formatting bar off the screen.  The error I'm getting is in reverse, it's jamming the top of the applet box box up "under" the above post, hiding it and making it inaccessible, and I suspect it's because in that one game, there are 730 PCs and NPCs combined and it's trying to fit as many as it can on the List.

BTW, I get around the error by just opening the post in another tab, I just sometimes forget and it's still mildly annoying.
