Interest Check: Freeform Star Trek/Superhero Crossover?

Checking if anyone besides me would be interested in a Star Trek/superhero crossover game. The superheroes would all be canon, the Star Trek ship and characters original. If so, would you prefer DC or Marvel?

But Rogue Leader, I hear you ask, what would be the advantages of playing a Star Trek character if I could play a superhero? I mean, some Vulcan science guy vs. Batman? Come on!

So here's the caveat: Only Star Trek characters can take advantage of Star Trek technology. That means only ST characters have access to phasers, any ship tech, giving commands, piloting the ship or any shuttle, etc., etc. The superhero types are civilians and passengers, and are expected to behave as such.

As far as a timeline, the game would take place during the Original Series era. That means no holodecks, no quantum slipstream, no Borg. It's two-fisted exploration all the way.

The story would center around a Federation starship that gets hurled through space and winds up deep in Klingon territory. They have to fight, outwit, and otherwise Trek their way home. Think of it as Star Trek meets "The Warriors" (that's a classic movie from 1979, based on the ancient Greek "Anabasis" by Xenophon). Along the way the make friends, enemies, discover new life and civilizations, and try to not get ganked by those pesky Klingons.

Interest Check: Freeform Star Trek/Superhero Crossover?

I am kind of interested.

If Oliver Queen is disarmed and the closest weapon he can reach to defend himself is a phaser you are saying he can't pick it up? That is some ganked up caveat.

As for as DC or Marvel that is more complicated than simply just picking one.
Which continuity would we use? Which time period would we use? What about time travel from a different time period than the one we picked? All those things effect a decision.

It's a freeform game. The way for Oliver Queen to not feel the need to pick up a phaser is to not write it. Superheroes have their own advantages over Star Trek characters. If you look at previous encounters (notably the several Star Trek/X-Men crossovers), you'll see that they were able to accomplish it with no problem at all, because it just never came up.

As far as continuity/timeline, I'm flexible. It's a freeform Star Trek crossover game. If someone wants to play Cyclops without all the decades of emotional baggage, have at it, I'm not here to bust anyone's groove.

In reply to Rogue Leader (msg # 3):

So basically your idea of incorporating the superheroes is a free for all. Someone wants to play a nonjackass Cycclops that’s fine but if someone wants to play a Jean Grey who dated a jackass Cyclops that routinely abused her that’s fine as well. You gotta pick one continuity or another not just throw a bunch of random shit in there and expect, hope it works out.

I tend to agree with HQ.  There is only one, usually tightly defined and very specific, way of having fun.

-or-

Maybe RL is on to something?  Surely there is room in GPI&A  for someone that has a neat idea and puts it out there in hopes of gathering like some likeminded players willing to give it a go.

Why look for problems that don't exist yet? What do you think the odds are that, of all the characters available, two potential superhero players are going to choose two characters that may have had historical conflicts, and not be able to hash out a workaround in the OOC beforehand? I bet the odds are pretty freaking low, like nearly zero. If you're not the kind of player that can communicate and hash things out, you should probably look elsewhere anyway, because my laid-back style of gaming is not going to suit you.

Hope is a wonderful thing. :)

Re: Interest Check: Freeform Star Trek/Superhero Crossover?

I can say that, if I were to join such a game, I'd be most interested in playing an OC character rather than a canon character.  So, I guess that means I'd be most interested in playing a Star Trek character, which is fine.  I'd also be more interested in the Marvel universe, rather than the DC universe, if only because I've read novels with that particular crossover.

Hmmm. Interesting, I had something like this before, but due to RL and setting it at the point where Voyager's computer became sentient it failed. I do wish you luck, however as I have too many irons in the fire.
