IC: D&D5E Ravenloft / Cthulhu game...
This is a Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition game set in Ravenloft that is heavily influenced by Call of Cthulhu, Sandy Petersen’s Cthulhu Mythos, Grim Hollow, The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond, Darkest Dungeon, and the original dark versions of Grimms’ Fairy Tales. Think gothic horror and dark fantasy. When Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft drops I will pick it up and see if we can use anything.
Gothic horror is more atmospheric and dread-based than jump scare and gore-based. It’s darker, more frightening, and the monsters are tougher. Foggy moors, decrepit castles, prophecies, fortune tellers, and madness. Relatively normal or low-powered people taking on forces and beings far beyond their comprehension. They investigate strange murders and nefarious cults, fight the monsters as best they can, and discover dark secrets. But those secrets have a price, and it’s often death or madness.
This will be a player-driven sandbox game with no predefined plot that takes place in a persistent world. In this case, a Cthulhu Mythos-infused Ravenloft. I will fill the world with plot hooks and adventure seeds and it’s up to the players to engage with the ones they find most interesting. If interest is low (up to seven players), then that will be the regular group. If interest is higher (eight or more), then we will have two groups. My limit is 12-14 players in two six-to-seven person groups.
Anyone who played in the old version of this game is welcome to join and will get priority. Though this is a reboot, so no using old characters or picking up where they left off.
Though we will probably start in Barovia, keep in mind that Ravenloft is far more than the castle, Strahd, and the valley of Barovia. Elements of Curse of Strahd will be available if players choose. But remember, an ever-shifting demiplane surrounds the valley and all manner of horrors await beyond the Mists...
