D&D 4th Edition?

I’m interested in running some D&D 4E but I’m not sure if there’s enough interest in the edition in general or if there’s enough interest in any specific one-shot, module, or campaign to get a game up and running.

So, the question is: what kind of game would fans of 4E on RPOL be interested in?

A side question: is there anyone here who hasn’t played 4E but is curious about learning that edition?

D&D 4th Edition?

I like to support any 4th Edition project that comes up. There are a few of us around.

I try not to be too picky. If anything, I'm not a big one for puzzles or following a storyline the GM has planned out and is keeping secret. I like as open an exchange with the DM as I can get.

Good luck garnering interest! H

D&D 4th Edition?

Oh heck yes. Bonus points if you can emphasize the big "PC's as superheroes" feeling 4E gives off. With the additional PHBs and supplementary material like the Psionics Handbook, I'd love to play in a Suicide Squad/Outsiders type of D&D game, where the PCs are outcasts and oddballs. Maybe something in Eberron, where we're investigators of the weird, or even a Dark Sun campaign? Something unusual, anyway.

D&D 4th Edition?

I'm big on Fourth Edition, but as ever, the problem is not just finding a game in the first place (which is hard enough as it is :P) but finding one that actually lasts. I'd prefer not to do a pre-written module of some kind, as that feels, well, pre-written, like there's a path the PCs are "supposed" to follow. But I may as well register my interest in general if something looks to be getting started. I like to play "monster races" and I like to RP, though every now and then of course it's fun to just go and smash/stab/melt/explode some bad guys ;).

In reply to Ameena (msg # 4):

I concur on not running a pre-written adventure, but I'm open to pre-written "regions" or "modules" where the PCs can adventure.

D&D 4th Edition?

Dark Sun is one of my favorite settings, but it needs a lot of buy in.

My preferred style of DMing is to run character-driven sandboxes. I dangle hooks and the players are free to follow or walk on. I like some established settings, the Nentir Vale or Dark Sun (for example), and I like to populate the area with existing modules (reskinned or parted out or changed enough to be interesting). But if the PCs never walk into the Keep on the Shadowfell (for example), there’s no loss as that’s just one part of the whole, not “where the PCs were meant to go”. But, villains exist and have goals they are pursuing. So if say Kalarel the Vile is there doing his thing, that still plays out unless the PCs stop him. The players are free to leave him alone. But he will summon undead legions and they will do what undead legions inevitably do. And again, the PCs are free to ignore that, too. I go for a living world feel. It’s not a static video game where the villains always stand around waiting until five minutes before the heroes arrive to start the super important ritual that you have to stop.

D&D4E combat can be fun, but it doesn’t work as a dungeon crawler. Far too much for that style of play. At a table, I think, it sings at about one fight a session or two. Plus there’s various ways to speed up combat without it feeling inconsequential.

D&D 4th Edition?

In reply to liblarva (msg # 6):

I'm playing in a sandbox like that now, where I can tell some familiar adventures are available as choice, but not as locked-in paths.

I for one don't need combat always to be consequential, at least in terms of PC death or even lost resources. I've had a lot of fun with encounters that don't do much more than highlight the kinds of threats to be found in a region, or which threaten NPCs or the success of a goal. I'm happy to discuss further elsewhere.

Edited to add: also a big fan of skill challenges (especially concurrent with combat) and skill challenge based exploration.

I mean, I love Dark Sun, as you well know, liblarva. Lol!

I'm a little hesitant but could be fun.

Okay. So that looks like four for Dark Sun.

The game's open and everyone's welcome. I'll give it a day or two and put up a players wanted if necessary to get a full group.
