Please let jase know that I'd be glad to help out, even just to bounce ideas off of. In real life, I'm a senior software architect for a company that specializes in web application development.

It seems to be a server problem though, to quote, "unreliable and convoluted".

It may be server related, and therefore beyond our control, which means we have to wait for somebody to take a look at it. Many websites are suffering similar issues, but a lot of hosting companies are currently running with skeleton staff only.

A 502 Bad Gateway Error is a general indicator that there's something wrong with a website's server communication. Since it's just a generic error, it doesn't actually tell you the website's exact issue, just that there is "something wrong".

I noticed some pages taking 8-10 seconds to load yesterday which in this instance was more helpful than pure error messages. I believe I've tracked it down to SQL performance issues as everything came good after I restarted the database server. I'll continue to keep an eye on it in the hope I can see the bottleneck starting to reduce performance again. Unfortunately after the restart everything came good so I currently can't track down where the bottleneck was. I did change a few performance settings, one was to change the database wait time from 28800 seconds (8 hours!) to 30 seconds. That might lead to a slightly more helpful error message if the issue rears its ugly head again.
