delete  questions

I searched the   back threads to see if I  could  put this in somewhere... It  can be deleted , of course..but I would like to know.

why are the posts  I delete  in the  'players  wanted   thread"..still there?, can't  we  have something that cleans  them out?

I keep , around 20  old posts  so  players  can see progress  as far as post count  goes, as I up day it, as well as  how long  my games have  run.

I   bump  posts  every week, because  RL sucks sometimes, and   some players  are  'butterfly' players who come and go..

so? if there  was a    thing  added ( and I don't know? this is out of my area ) that would make the   deleted posts vanish, as the GMs   clean up thier   threads?... wouldn't it save   space?

When you delete a post in any public forum, it is not really deleted, it is, however, hidden from every user on the site except you and the Moderators.  So only you can see those posts.

Only Moderators can completely delete a post in a public thread, and we only do it in the case of posts that breach site rules, and only then if we can't deal with the issue some other way (because if we do delete a post, on request, then the poster will inevitably ask if we can restore it at some point).

I don't want to contradict you, bbr, but when I go in any of donsr's Players Wanted threads (or any other PW threads with deleted posts) I can see all the empty posts with a blue 'this message was deleted at...'

I *think* I've also seen deleted posts like this in other public forums.

It does work the way you describe, with only the GM(s) and delete-er being able to see the deleted post, in games from what I've seen

You can't read (or even see) the original posts though - they are hidden from you.

In reply to Low Key (msg # 4):

I'm pretty sure they are left that way so that if someone had been reading/replying to said deleted post, they see that it is deleted and can see the reason why it was deleted.  Saves a lot of "Where did the post go?" questions. :P

In reply to bigbadron (msg # 5):

Yes, there's no content (that I can see) in the posts

And, yes pdboddy, I think you're right about the why

But my reading of the op was that donsr is asking if they could get rid of the 'empty' deleted posts, so that the Wanted Players thread could be 'original post' then 'new post' (or some variation thereof) rather than 'original post', two pages of deleted empty posts (or however many there are), then 'new post'.

From bbr's reply I'm thinking the answer is No.
I was just clarifying what 'hidden from every user except you and the mods' actually means.
The content of the message is hidden, but its existence is not.

yeah..I have seen other places where its  deleted  and there is just the Box, saying it was Deleted... For me.. its the whole  ad is there  and it says  'deleted'  for me to see.

now?.. I know  they 'go away' after  a  while (8+1/2 years of   bumping ads  would..um..add up!)

I do notcie on the   thread's  post count, that when you delete a post.. the Numbers for  your post go down, as well as the numbers  for  players  wanted"

for all my games  I will  edit   somethings  per week... Post count  when we hit a  Miles stop ..the date...ect….this way folks  who are considering , can have  some more information  on the life of the game..

anyway?... I just thought  if they  could  free up space.. get rid of them when the  GM  deletes it.

Short posts (like most ads) don't take up that much space.  It does start to add up though when you have games with hundreds of thousands of posts.

Plus there's the thing where some GMs change stuff in their ad posts, then six months later they're wondering if they ever mentioned certain information.  If the post is still visible to them, they can go back and check (and, if they want to repeat it, they can just copy and paste it from the original post, or undelete it).
