Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

Roywin has found a good hiding spot, but when the wizard calls them she approaches the main door.
"Apologies Sertieren,I don't want to leave my friends outside by their own if a threat is coming. I would not want to leave those young gentlemen alone to face whatever is coming by their own. They will need my help."
She continues to talk to the wizard, trying to let the rest of the gang in.
"You know, this young men might be a little direct sometimes, by they have a good heart."
The old gnome gives the wizard the best of her smiles, while from the corner of her eye checks for whatever is coming.

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

The old wizard was a crotchety sort, that was for certain, though if he was half-mad it was hard to tell.  He liked this his way, that was for certain, and likely didn't want his home overrun with strangers.  That was understandable enough, and if his advice or teaching proved less than useful, well, they had other plans they could use.  And if the old wizard did have good advise, then a little acquiescing to his whims was a small price to pay.

"Landor, Gar, I think we'll be all right," she says quietly, not wanting to contradict Roywin or give their host another reason to want them to leave.  "I'll come in, sir."  She put down Ingrid, her weasel familiar, and went to go inside, holding the door open for Tai and Roywin (and whoever else Roywin could convince to be let in).

Gar snorted, waiting outside and away from the house, mumbling in orcish with arms crossed and a stern look on his face. He leaned against a tree looking out into the wild, his demeanor smoldering

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

When part of the group enters the home, the wizard sits down and takes some wine. He sips it and smiles "What you want? Eh? Speak up, I don't have all day. Night. You know what I mean. Speak up I say or leave." His eyes narrow and pulls out a scroll, looking as if reading it. The kenku whistles and sits down crosslegged and watching him intently.

Outside, nothing happen. Its quiet. Nothing creeps out and its relatively peaceful despite the village getting attacked at times.

"Wizard Sertieren, we are here because of the hobgoblin attacks on your village.  We know they are supposed to lair in the ruined keep, and were wondering if there was a way you could see it from afar with magic.  I am new to the arcane arts and don't yet have that mastery, and you are far more familiar with the area than we are.  Will you help us?" Lyrian asks politely.

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

Roywin nods as Lyr speaks. "We came to your town as my friend says to help with the hobgoblin attacks. On top of the divination services that she's suggesting, I was wondering if you've found or felt anything that seems odd from your perspective, either in the town or around it. It is uncommon for hobgoblins to be so aggressive towards the town. It's either there is something here they want really strongly or they have been organised by a much stronger being... or both. Any information or thoughts you have on this will be much appreciated."
The gnome smiles as she waits for the man to answer them.

Landor leaned against the tree he was hiding behind. At least this was a way to keep watch for hobgoblins while the other two talked to the wizard.

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

"You came here asking for what? My aid? My assistance? Are you serious? You came here, insulted my home and belittled my abilities now you wish for my aid?" The mage chuckles and leans forwards "You seems to know little of these hobgoblins. They attack but leave me be. Ruthless. I can aid you with say gold. Spells I can supply. But your attitude is far from warrented. But I can aid you. A spell for each of you."

Tai doesn't move, just stares at the odd man. His eyes narrow but he doesn't draw his blade. The mage stares at him, as if fighting him in some strange battle.

The mage leans back "Bah. The village is plagued but not my home. Not here, no. I keep it safe. They can't see within. No not at all. The ghosts here protect it don't you know?" He laughs "If it made you feel better, I will offer my aid to the village but not for free. No." He pulls out several items "So for now what do you like?" He ponders for a moment and pulls them aside away from one another.

OOC
Lyr: Teaches you Ray of Enfeeblement
Roywin: Free

Scroll of Dispel Magic 400 gold
Scroll of Fireball     400 gold
Scroll of Invisibility 200 gold
Scroll of Fly          400 gold
Bracers of Armor +1    1000 gold
Ring of Protection +2  8000 gold

Can scribe scrolls of up to 3rd level or lower, or craft wonderous items (CL 5 or lower)

Outside, everything seems calm. No one creeps out near the half-orc or human. Down the path a open wagon with two villagers are visible. The wagon looks empty and them it gets caught and leans forwards snapping the wagon. They drop down and stares at it, one of them rubs his eyes and they go about in a attempt to fix it. One of them heads towards a nearbye building and comes out with some tools over his shoulder.

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

Roywing smiles at the man as he speaks. She looks like a little grandmother surrounded by her grandchildren. "As I said, I am sorry for the words that hurt you. I ensure that despite their words they are brave and honourable people."
She stops for a second and continues talking changing the subject, hoping the man does not focus on the small collision they had a few minutes ago.
"And yes, we came here looking for your aid, as we understand you might be one of the few people, if not the only, that might know what is hiding behind the weird behaviour of the hobgoblins. We definitively know very little about it."
She puts her hands together and picks the sentences he just said about his house being safe.
"I understand that you've managed to keep your house safe from the attacks, although I don't understand how. But if you want to hear my opinion, I think even when the house is protected from the attacks, once the whole village is devastated by the hobgoblins and they roam free around the house, it will not make nice place to live. Even if it's safe... I would consider the advantages of keeping the village and the villagers safe, not only as a moral decision, but also as something that can benefit you in the long term."
She softens her smile a little bit.
"You know, being considered a critical part of their safety, keeping the commercial lines opened, having a way of sell anything you'd like to produce, as well as be able to buy some products you might be interested. And of course, not being surrounded by hobgoblins yourself."

OOC: I'd like to buy a Scroll of Dispel Magic, buy I only have 19 gp so I guess I'll need to cash in before anything else.

"Thank you for the spell, I'm certain it will come in useful against the warrior hobgoblins."  Lyrian was uncertain what else to ask the mage.  He seemed to know his craft, but his interest in things outside his sphere seemed... limited.  It was like that with some people.  They took care of their own, but did not worry about those beyond.  "What of the ghosts that you spoke of?

Gar, like Landor, noted the caravan, and looked at the priest with a nod. He doubted it was any threat, in fact any attackers came, they would probably be targeted first. He none the less, kept a sharp eye on them

Re: (IC) The End or the Beginning?

"You talk quiet a lot and I do not like it. As for the hobgoblins, I don't care for them. They leave me alone, so I will leave them. As for this town, they send you to ask for my aid instead of doing it themselves? They are fools to not come up here and do it themselves. Why should I save them? Perhaps out of pitty? They have done little. I keep to myself and I will keep doing it. The hobgoblins are their issue-not mine. If they approach, I will do what is neccasary to keep my home safe. Commerical lines? There isn't any for my kind of magic. As for my products, money is required or something that equals to it. And I'm a critical part of their safety but they cannot come here and ask for it? Go. Leave. I grow anger with your antics and frivoulus ways. You tell them to come to me, tell their mayor to approach and I may hear him out." The old man stands up and points at the door "As for the ghosts? Well they are hiding. Hiding from you. And you. Everyone else they might yes might approach." He grins.

Tai stands up, gripping his sword with it slightly open and bows to the man.

Elsewhere, still nothing happens. The villagers are able to get the cart slowly along after fixing it to a degree. Birds chirp, typical animals move about. It seems to be a calm...least before the storm. Nothing creeps out. No signs of hobgoblins or anything close to it. Just a peaceful town.

Lyrian will give a small bow to their host.  "Thank you for your time and your magic, sir. We will do what we can for the town, and your home."

Then she'll head out into the sunlight to talk to Landor and Gar.  "Well, we learned a bit of magic that may come in handy, and it seems that we are the hope for this town to make it through all of this safely. Nothing much further on about what the hobgoblins are doing. I think we'll have to do our scouting the old-fashioned way."

Roywin thanks the old man with a bow and very few additional words and leaves. She then leaves the house and joins the others. You can she in her face something is not right
Once they have moved away from the house she speaks with bitterness "Grumpy old lonely wizards... As useless as they consider themselves magnificent. Please if I ever turn like one of them, slap me in the face." she says those last words with a gentle tone and a smile again.
"And Lyr is right. We seem to be the one hope for this town. Let's move and try to gather some information about these hobgoblins and their intentions."

Gar, leaning against a tree heard the others come out, but kept his eyes on the caravan. When they spoke, the half orc snorted. "You believed he'd help more than he did....the crazy goat is lucky he's still alive, magic user or not!" he looked at Rollin with a smile and gleam in his eye. "Trust me little man....you show signs of that, you'll be slapped long before turning into him. and if the slap doesn't work, we'll then..." he cracked his knuckles

He stood up and streched his neck. "Now we have that nonsense out of the way I can do my thing and track them."

The bird stares at the half-orc, eyes narrowed. He shakes his head, bothered by Gar's antics that didn't help the situation either-but made it worse perhaps. Yet the mage did not have to antagonize him. With all that has happened, Tai sighs. He speaks up in what sound like Gar, or something he said "Stop. Grumpy. Both of you. Enough." His tone sounds serious and he glances at Roy "Said more."

Roywin nods at Landor. "Let's go. Three only thing we can do is maybe ask the mayor to ask himself the wizard for help, in case they are attacked while we're out. It's a long shot, but the man claimed the town didn't bother to ask for help themselves."
She smiles at the rest.
"He'll probably make another excuse once they ask him, but at least they can try something. In the meantime, we should move on."

"No no no. We're fine. Just want to get home with all that is going on. If something happens I want to be with family no?" The farmer nods his head "Your new here aren't you?" His eyes goes to each of them, smiling slightly but when he sees the half-orc and odd bird creature he seems to get somewhat concerned and he steps back "So where are you headed?"

Tai stares at the Gar, seeming to be not happy and he crosses his arms and bows his head as they talk to the man. The kenku looks around at the few houses and towards the center of town, remaing near the wizard.

"We're actually heading out of town. We're helping with the issue of the hobgoblins... But maybe you could help us delivering a message to the mayor. Could you let him know that if he speaks to the wizard himself he might help with protecting the town in case of an attack whole we're away? We need to find out what's going on out of town, but we'd like to make sure someone helps while we're away. Could you do that for us?"
