For being small, the libary in the mansion held a decent amount of books. Some were so old they could fall apart in your hands. Others were made recently. Her dad knew she liked books so whenever he could, he got them. But nothing romantic. She had to make amend with her writing. Some books had hidden areas for love but it was mainly books about trade, locations. Who and what did the trading. Some were more action.  Her dad never came in here, as her mom loved to read. Perhaps it reminded him of her. The bard sits upon the second floor, her feet dangling off the side as she reads. No one really came up here. It was her place. Her brothers friend James entered the room and locked the door. He looked around for her and slowly moved in her direction, clambering up the stairs perhaps drunk.

Marianne was rather enjoying this book. It was a small, slim volume, which had been shoved to the back in a set of particularly dusty shelves, with an unassuming cover, and it was old- probably older than her. It was a bloody tale- far more thrilling than what she usually got to read. She had to assume her mother had probably brought it here- it was hardly her papa's style. Still, it was far more her style than most of her father's books. She was fully engrossed in the protagonist's struggle to pay his debts before his debtors came for their pound of flesh.

Well, she was engrossed right up until she heard clattering around on the library's lower level. The house had three servants, there was no need for the cook to be up here, and she very much doubted that the other two would be that loud, so it had to be one of the boys. She sighed, quickly marking her page, shutting her book, and stashing it on the closest shelf before whoever it was found their way up onto the mezzanine.

Marianne quickly shifted so her legs weren't hanging down off of the edge any more. She wanted to be able to walk away quickly if she didn't feel like talking with whoever had come.

The sound start to come up the stairs but when she turns towards them she sees nothing. Some books from across from her drop down by some unknown means. What is going on?

Marianne caught her bottom lip between her teeth. What on earth... She moved over, picking up the closest book and glancing at the cover- some ridiculously boring history book charting the history of a small port town not too far from their home. Nobody would have touched this one in years. Huh. She ran her thumb over the embossed title on the spine, before moving to put it away.

"Mark, if you're trying to mess with me, this isn't funny." She murmured, glancing down off of the mezzanine to try and see who she'd heard clattering around.

The woman feels something move by her head but not hit her. A eery feeling forms as someone can be hear coming up the stairs and it is indeed Mark. He moves towards her, one of his hands on the railing and the other behind his back. He smiles <red>"Just the two of us. Come here. You know you want to."<red>

Marianne feels something push her from behind almost pushing her off the balcony.

At the feel of someone behind her, Marianne felt panic bubble up in her. Mark was drunk- and while that wasn't anything new, it meant that whoever had shoved her probably was too.

"Leave me alone, Mark. This isn't funny." Her voice had a serious edge to it now. She was getting sick Mark's advances. She whipped around, turning her back on Mark to try and see what had pushed her, her fingers curling around the railing to try and steady herself.

"I have something for you. You want to see it." The mans hand remains behind his back and he grins at her but keeps his distance.

As she backs away, she slips and falls but remains on the balcony. She glances over and notices some blood leading to a old suit of armor. The blood comes down from its helmet. Its a old set of armor, full set with a axe in its hands. Just a suit of armor.

"Let me help you up." Mark offers his hand, watching her.

"I fell asleep." Marianne muttered under her breath, trying hard to control her pounding heart. That was the only way any of this made sense. She was just trying to convince herself at this point. The space suit, and Mark being in the library, and the books- that had to be it. She'd been reading by the fire, and she'd fallen asleep, and this was a dream. A very bizarre, very realistic dream.

She eyed Mark's hand for a moment- but, well. If it was a choice between getting close to the sleezebag and breaking her neck falling over the balcony, she'd take it. She grabbed his hand, letting him pull her up, and muttering a begrudging "Thanks."

The man grabs the hand and keeps a hold on it, holding her close for a moment and then pulls out his other hand revealing a dagger. Its pressed against the abdomen of Marianne! "Spoiled brat." He grins "No one can save you."

Marianne began to panic more. She could feel his sweaty hands on her, feel the cold blade of the knife. It had to be a dream, but if it was a dream then why did it feel so real. “L-Let go of me.” She tried her best to sound firm, but failed pretty spectacularly on that count. “You have it good here. James let’s you stay, you don’t have-“ what was she even supposed to say to this maniac? Her voice was coming quickly, but the words seemed to be flowing out of her with very little thought behind them. She just needed to try“James- h-he won’t protect you if you do this. You’ll end up on the gallows! J-Just let me go, and we can work this out.”

"Now there's Kate. Oh she tried her best. Really, she did." The man shoves the set of armor down in front of him, while holding Marianne close. The axe sticking  out over the balcony. Against the wall, a bloody dead body-Kate "Such a shame. She was interesting but in a good way." Her thoat looked like someone chocked her to death "James? Oh yes James. He definatly won't help. You know he wanted you out. So now I am going to make happen. Course not the way you planned. James was fragile. Just a little poke here...poke there. And his entire wold came crashing down. He's afraid of everyone." The man shrugs "Your going to die. Circumstance and all of that. You do realize your good ol' dad fortune right? Was beneath us the entire time. Want to see? Come on now. You want to see this."

The sound that escaped Marianne at he sight of the mangled corpse- well, it wasn’t exactly human. There was panic and fear and disgust behind it. Her and Kate- well. It was hard to be exactly friends- it wasn’t as though Kate was there because she wanted to be, if the money dried up she wouldn’t have been back, but she’d been the closest thing Marianne had had since her father died. She briefly thought of the girl’s family, but- no. She couldn’t let her mind wonder. Had to stay on track.

“Yes!” She replied, maybe a little too eagerly when he suggested going somewhere else. Maybe- just maybe- if she could keep him sweet, keep him talking long enough she’d find a chance to slip away. She was unarmed and alone- she didn’t have much in the way of options now except stroking his ego and keeping him from delivering a death blow. “Yes, show me, please? Just you and me. Just like you wanted,”

Marianne didn’t have time to process what was happening. By the time she’d managed to grab at the ledge to try and catch herself, she was already falling. She wasn’t even sure if she screamed or not, barely able to process the polished wooden floor hurtling closer.

CRACK!

The bard hits the ground hard but she is still alive. Unable to move, the woman stares up at her attacker and he smiles down at her and grabs the axe. He climbs down and kneels "Its right below you. You found it!" He looks at the ground and the woman can make out some sort of gold trace with her familiy logo but it looks old.

And yellowish. Like its been in there for quiet some time. They were above the money and didn't realize it. Of course they got money from their parents.

But not all of it.

"Don't worry. James won't know of this. He's afraid to come here. Probably because I got really sad and told him you killed yourself. Here. Of all places. And right where your laying. So. since he won't claim it and you'll be dead. Kate's dead but has no say over it. That leaves me. Such a shame." He rubs his chin "Over the yellow, over the yellow. Over the yellow." He jumps into the air and lands, seeming to be excited.

Marianne felt the wind knocked out of her, and while she tried her best to turn her head and look, or just to get away from him, but she could barely move. Was her leg broken? Was her back broken? She didn’t know any more. Everything hurt. She was pretty sure she was bleeding, at least based on the wet feeling of her hair, and she was so sure he was about to take an axe to her. She managed a grimace- there was no way out now, anyway. “You’re never going to get your hand on-“
Her head was spinning. What did he want. “I- what you want. That. Yellow...” was everything supposed to look brown? God, she was going to be sick.

The man smiles down at her, holding the axe tightly. He raises it up and starts to sing!

When a man's an empty kettle he should be on his mettle,
And yet I'm torn apart.
Just because I'm presumin' that I could be kind-a-human,
If I only had a heart
I'd be tender - I'd be gentle and awful sentimental
Regarding love and art.
I'd be friends with the sparrows ... and the boys who shoots the arrows
If I only had a heart.

And the axe comes down upon her head. She sees nothing but darkness for a moment. Pain fills her body.

Marianne feels the life being drawn from her. A bright light comes before her revealing a odd glow. Brightest the human had ever seen. Her body seems to get healed! Yet when she awakens....

She's in a unknown forest.

End of Prequel!
