Geography of the Realm

There are five dominant world powers, each in control of one of the known major sources of magic. This access to and control over one of the major sources of power is, in fact, exactly what catapulted each of them into their position as a world superpower.

The space between these powers is occupied by less powerful nations and regions, which act as a sort of battleground for the more powerful regions. The sheer power brought to bear by primary sorcerers is such that attacking the other world powers directly in open conflict is a surefire path to mass destruction, and so instead their conflicts are in the form of proxy wars, trade disputes, and formalized competitions for status.

In terms of actual geography, the further south a traveler goes, the colder and more arid things become, culminating in the steppes of Diameera. The lone actual city of Diameera, Vielina, is hailed as the finest in the world in terms of architecture and design; outside of this city the steppes are almost wholly undeveloped and most people retain their nomadic lifestyle. Past Diameera is a frigid, sparsely populated waste that is almost wholly unexplored. Some speculate that there is inhabitable land beyond the waste, but if so, it has not made its presence known.

The central parts of the world are temperate and heavily inhabited. In the east, the Artenian Regency occupies the plains and deserts leading up to the eastern coastline. The central part of the world is heavily contested with numerous small states that act as the major battleground for proxy wars. West of this sprawl is a mountain range, which is home to the Radiant Coalition - the most recent of the major powers of the world.

West of the mountains comes a highly fertile coastline, which is home to numerous small city-states that act as a major center of finance and culture. These city-states act as a world power, with actual governance being secondary to the major trade guilds. The largest guild, the Confluence of the Lethe, extends across most of these city-states and wields the political power of a nation-state.

To the north, the continent descends into dense jungles and tropical rainforest. This jungle is home to Old Sarkova, the remnants of an ancient empire which still wields enormous power. Past Old Sarkova comes open sea filled with small islands and peninsulas.
