Request to Join/Character Creation

Tears of the Sun is a story-driven RPG, set in the Chaos Earth setting of RIFTS which is set before the cataclysm and the coming of magic.  We are exploring the time before and are  looking for diverse and unique players and characters to populate the world. As a result, our request to join/character creation process is actually a process, and not just a one-and-done sort of thing. It can be a little longer and more complicated for which we apologize now, but the goal is to help players create unique characters that they can play with their own unique stories to tell.

Step One - Concept

The first step in the process is easy, submit an RTJ with a basic character concept/outline. Example: "I want to play a NEMA Soldier who graduated West Point Academy and is an officer". It's as simple as that. The GM staff will then review the concept to determine if/how it would fit into the overall scheme of the game.

Things the GM looks at:

- Does this concept already exist? How similar is this concept/character to other characters already in the game?

- How easy is it going to be to fit this character into the story?

- What kinds of stories does this concept/character lend itself to? And will the GM staff need to create new NPCs/stories specifically for this concept/character?

As not all character types/concepts are welcome, we suggest that new players have a primary and a secondary idea that they want to try out. While the game is set in the RIFTS Megaverse and there may be some dimensional shenanigans and the chance to learn magic/psychic abilities later on, initially, everyone is just human and/or mutant animal. So, because I have to say it, the following are not allowed at first:

- Psychics
- Magic Users
- Fae or Creatures of Magic
- Anything that is ancient, immortal, god-like, invincible, or quasi-invincible.

Character class
As the nature of the storyteller system is slightly different than the RIFTS class-based system, the classes aren't as broken out.  The skills, merits and flaws taken will separate the character from others more than anything else.
