Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

Thanks cool!

Character creation in Sea of Dead Men is really very simple, there aren't pages and pages of spells and feats or optimum development to read up on and plan.

First, choose a play book. You've done that.

Next, assign points to your Attributes and Actions. Read up on what they are first.

You've got a special ability to choose.

Then you've got a list of people.  You need to choose some as friendly and some as enemies.

That's it, you're done!

Don't worry about items or load out, what happens is half way through the mission we say "I'm taking a medium load", which means five things,  and then during the mission we pull out things as we need them.

Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

The most important thing is reading up on the Attributes amd Actions and what they do.

There are three Attributes: Insight, Prowess and Resolve.

Insight has four Actions: Finesse, Navigate (including sailing), Patch, Scan.

If you look at that section, there is a line after the first column. They count for your Insight Resistance. So if you have Finesse 1, Patch 2, Scan 1, then reading down that first column you have three points, one for each dot.

So the way the system works, you try to pick a lock using Finesse. You roll one d6 because you have one dot in Finesse. If you were rolling Patch, you would be rolling 2d6, and choosing the best result. 1-3 is a fail, 4-5 is "Yes, but, consequence", 6 is success, no consequence. You roll a 5 trying to pick the lock, and the GM says "you opened the lock but broke your lockpick inside." Now you can roll Insight to reduce that consequence, or make it worse, or maybe go away altogether. Your Insight Resistance is 3, so you roll 3d6 to do that.

Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

Also note, you get bonuses from our crew:

Scallywags: Each PC may add +1 action rating to Finesse, Scan, or Vault (up to a max rating of 3)

Devil’s Own Luck: Each PC gets +1d to resistance rolls

Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

So, Ardeshir and Sean, I posted a character sheet of one of the previous players to your character sheets. So just modify it to fit your characters and ask any questions here if you need help with character creation.

One thing that's different is that you all start with 2 special abilities from your Playbook instead of 1.

You should have 7 Action Ratings in total, 3 from Playbook, 4 from Heritage and Background (just choose what you think fits). You only have 6 now.

Also, the crew ability Scallywags allows you to gain an additional +1 to either Vault, Finesse or Scan. So add that one too.

As for the Attributes, those are equal to the number of action ratings belonging to that attribute that are at least at 1.

In reply to The Admiral (msg # 343):

Okay that shpuld be it then. As far as personality goes I'm thinking of basing him loosely on Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday. As far as introducing him, I'd prefer to wait until the ship makes port and someone finds him playing cards.

Insight should be 2

Resolve should be 1

Remember, it only counts the number of action ratings you have at 1 or more, thus the max is 4.

Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

Anyway, I'm afraid I won't be able to run this game for the next two weeks, so we'll resume it afterwards. For now, feel free to jump into the Aboard the Memelesi thread and RP some interactions between your characters. We'll go with the assumption that you all were already established members of the crew.

Sounds good! We should assume that they are respected members of the crew, so we can have some ship discussions.

Admiral, before you shoot away, could you give us some direction on what to discuss, specifically:

1) What can we do with this much gold? What options do we have, and what is the time frame for that happening (ie can we upgrade the ship's guns, or is that a long term clock project?)

2) Just how much heat are we now in? Are we effectively at war with Revelle now, with hunter-killers out after us? Does Revelle have any enemies?

3) with those in mind, what are our options for the next score?

Re: The Portside Tavern (OOC Chat)

Alright, so... I'll be very busy until the end of June, but I'll continue to run the game at a slower pace. Just keep it in mind, I might not log in for several days in a row sometimes, so don't think I've forgotten about the game.

Anyway, here's the result of the Payoff Phase:

Take: 40 Coin (Thanks to your planning and great luck, you were able to take everything of value)

Heat: 3 to Revelle (Orlov did a good job on setting up the Falcon as the masterminds behind this, but your mugs are still gonna be on wanted posters and they're gonna suspect that you were at least involved, plus the whole situation was wild and chaotic), 5 to Falcon (They are gonna be pissed once they learn that it was you who made them the subject of a Revellan manhunt)

Reputation: 4 (You would've gotten more, but as you blamed it on the Falcon, some of the notoriety also goes to them, until people find out the truth)

XP: In addition to the XP gained during the Score, Orlov as the sole remaining player who participated in the score since the very beginning can either raise one of his Action Ratings by 1 (3 is max for now) or take 1 new Special Ability from any Playbook.

Crew XP: 5
