Three kobolds try to pull the vines and roots entangling them up but they are not strong enough to break free.

Baylor seems to have lost all interest in the fray, considering it over. She kneels down next to the kobold corpse left by Benedict. Something has caught her eye.

Chyresia approaches the entangled kobolds and menaces them with her bloodied spear.

"Lay down!" she commands, uncertain if they will understand her, but not wishing to simply exterminate them while she is not actively threatened.

"Why are you here?" she commands again, shaking the spear in their faces.

She glances over at Baylor, but does not let her attention wander. If any of the trapped kobolds try to wriggle free, she will stab at them -- not to kill, but to persuade to a different point of view.

The three kobolds are terrified of the spear wielding human. They claw desperately at the vines holding them fast. There expressions change a bit as the vines begin to loosen and recede. The kobolds show no sign of comprehension but clearly want no piece of the wild looking human. As soon as they are able they flee into the forest.

Benedict is eating a kobold and does not seem to notice them go.

Noticing something peculiar on the first torn up kobold corpse near the tree, she walks over and stands above it looking down. She winces in distaste.

Benedict is happily and noisily crunching bones and enjoying a well deserved meal.

Chyresia shakes her spear at the fleeing wretches and then joins the lovey gnome, picking up her bow and inspecting it on the way.

"What was that all about?" she asks. "Seems a big risk to take just for some fresh vegetables."

She looks down at the mangled body wondering what has caught Baylor's attention

"Indeed, very strange. I think, they thought they had an edge. Stupid. I wonder if this gave them courage."

She points down to a very strange twisted pieces of wood hanging about the ruined kobolds eviscerated neck. The totem is slick with blood.

Chy is way out of her depth here with magic and wonderful gardens in the wilderness. She shrugs and moves away.

"What do you want to do with the bodies, Baylor? Benedict surely can't eat them all, and they'll start to rot soon. Shall I help you dig a grave?"

She does not suggest consigning them to the river -- that just seems rude to whoever is downstream.

Baylor kneels and reluctantly touches the wooden holy symbol. She recoils from its coldness. A shiver involuntarily runs down her spine. She steels her nerves, grasps the wooden idol and cuts the leather strap with her knife.

She stands and displays it for Chy.

" Gnomesmasher.  Kurtulmak. "

Chy is fairly certain that Baylor is not cursing her in some unknown tongue, but she has no idea what those words mean. She shrugs.

"Ranger girl, me," she admits. "Huntress. No voodoo stuff."

The druid's expression is serious.

"This is a holy symbol of Kurtulmak,  the Gnomesmasher.  The ceator of kobolds in our world. This should not be here. We should see if there are any others. The priests of Glittergold went to great lengths to destroy these. I havn't seen one in over a century. Benedict will dispose of the bodies he does not consume. You need rest. We should leave in a few hours, before dawn. Its a long trip. It now seems more urgent."

She places the totem in a leather pouch. These lights will fade soon.


Chy gets 200xp for combat and a bonus 50 for rp and picture.

Chyresia will help Baylor look for other totems. When they are sure there are none left to be found, she will find a place to sleep for the night.

No other totems are discovered. Baylor seems satisfied by this. She then shows Chy into her hovel. It is snug to say the least. Chy is able to curl up in the tiny room with a low ceiling. It is surprisingly well ventilated and cozy. Baylor rests nearby. Chy only gets a few short hours in before Baylor is rousing her awake.

"It's still dark, but if we are going to make Glitterhovel today, we need to start floating."

She has a backpack packed for herself. She is ready to depart.

Chy stretches and rubs the sleep from her eyes.

"Let's get going," she nods. "But maybe breakfast first?"

Back on the river, it takes a moment to get used to the way the raft sits in the water with two riders, but they are soon sliding past the bank on their way to Glitterhovel.

Chy sings a song she learned from her mother.

The air is cool, and twilight falls, and the river flows quietly by;
The summit of the mountains glitters In the evening sun.

The fairest maiden is sitting in wondrous beauty up there,
Her golden jewels are sparkling, she combs her golden hair.

The float is dark and chilly. Baylor seems concerned about the events of the previous evening but she doesn't mention it. She compliments Chy on the lovely song. Mostly they ride in silence.  After two hours the sun starts to brighten the sky. The silence is shattered by a distant boom or explosion of sorts. The sound coming from the direction they are heading. It is hard to say how far.

"Is that thunder?" Chy looks to the druid wondering what the river is taking them toward.

OOC: In a pre-tech world, I would think she has not heard explosions per se -- maybe reports of volcanoes, earthquakes, or meteors?

"No not thunder. At least not natural thunder. That sounded like a thunderstone perhaps. We should remain vigilant."

Baylor seems distant. She is thinking about the sound and the holy symbol of Kurtulmak and the overly confident kobold patrol the night before. These things seem like signs of trouble.

Chyresia checks her weapons and steers the raft into the middle of the river, as long as it seems safe, to be as far away from both banks as they can.

A few minutes later smoke can be smelled on the breeze blowing from the east. Chy is not certain, but she thinks she hears... singing?

"I think we are getting closer," she murmurs to Baylor, taking her longbow in hand and notching an arrow.

Two minutes later two terrified and badly burned kobolds are heading down stream as quickly as possible. When they notice the raft the vear away and into the trees for cover but they continue fleeing west.

"Perhaps the scoudrels have blown themselves up with their carlessness? But that singing was in gnomen, but souded more human to me. Stay alert."

The sight of the kobolds after the fight in the night puts Chyresia on full alert. She scans ahead for any signs of danger.

As the raft drifts around a bend, Chy and Baylor see 4 men puting out a fire under a large tree with house built in its canopy. Baylor recognizes the three gnomes, but the fourth, a halfelf, is a stranger to her. There are dead kobolds laying about with two fires that are nearly under control. They look like they could use some help.


DM not: 100 xp for establishing a consistent character. Avoiding conflict and respecting life seems very appropriate for a ranger.
