Merlin is a large man that would look fit in an ad about lumberjacks or selling Ford trucks. Sharp with sandy blond hair he has the bearing of a military life and was likely someone who screwed up a lot to be that still all the damn time. He wears comfortable clothing for someone his size, accenting it all with enough tech to make a nerd proud.

In reality he was indeed prior military and if the amount of scars on his body showing where tech was removed, he was not likely aware for most of it. He has turned to 'casting spells' on the net space to help cope with his stress.
