Pixel Crawl

Eighteen months ago a massive object appeared in orbit at the L2 Lagrange point, displacing the Webb Telescope. Kilometers long and shaped like a cylinder, it dominated the news cycle for months as national space programs raced to launch projects to investigate the mystery.

And then... nothing. The US, China, and Russia reached the object fairly quickly, followed by the European Union and India... and there were no reports. As it fell out of the news cycle, interest gradually waned, rumor being that either the object was solid all the way through, or no means of egress was possible. It was predicted that it would take at least a decade before any reports would be made public, and outside of a few unconvincing fakes, nothing more was heard.

Until the US government started covertly recruiting experts in 3rd and 4th generation consoles - the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Master System - as civilian experts.

Pixel Crawl is a science fiction game about exploring a weird space anomaly that bears a peculiar similarity to mid-80s video game content. Players are civilian 'experts' - video game historians, streamers, speed-runners - in 8-bit games tasked with acting as guides to the field scientists exploring said anomaly. Gameplay will center on exploration and discovery, with elements of cosmic horror, and science fiction.

Inspirations: Gantz, Cube, Event Horizon, Captain N: The Game Master, Stargate: SG-1

The game will be run in GURPS 4e. Players will not need any familiarity with the system. Character creation will occur as we play; starting with a nearly blank sheet and a strong character concept.
